Me with Nosha and Ayak; these girls live at an orphanage that Henry and I used to visit in Sudan to play with children. |
Nathan Prevette--I have always struggled with discontentment in the mundane periods of my life; transitioning from life in the Nuba mountains of Sudan, and boarding school in the Rift Valley of Kenya, to college in Central Missouri has been a struggle to say the least. And is something that I'm still praying about and seeking joy for. I also know however that God has put unique experiences in my life, and certain dreams and passions that can't be silenced. I am working towards an education in Public Health and Nursing because God has put on my heart the health and developmental needs of people in Sudan and Kenya. In Africa where health care is so scarce and often inaccessible, education and community interventions need to be implemented to reduce the incidence of illness. The most effective means of doing that is through clean water, shelter, and food. It was awesome when Henry approached me earlier in the year with a proposition; to go home!, to the people we love in Kenya and set in motion some of the passions and dreams that we both share.
In addition to the well project, me and henry have been brainstorming ways that we could each use our skills and our majors this summer. I will be volunteering at a mission hospital and assisting nurses, physicians, and surgeons as they work to provide life saving medical care to kenyans. It will be an exciting oppurtunity as well to do some community health education in the IDP camps. Additional ideas that are still developing are the building of playgrounds in the camps; utilizing the shop skills that me and a number of my freinds in kenya have, as well as chicken coops which can serve as both a food and income source.
